I guess that I am like many others who use dates to file emails. So I have folders inside Sylpheed and Claws like ALUG->2013-December and so on. But of course we're nearing a year end. Is there any way to automate the creation of directories and filters for email programs?
I've looked online and see something similar for Thunderbird but not for Claws and Sylpheed. Does anybody have any ideas about the best way to do this? Or is it best to do it manually?

Have you looked at Alpine? It has 'Prune' which as I understand it can be set up to do that. Mutt can be probably too - both text email clients allow for more configurability that GUI ones I believe. Why do you use both Claws and Sylpheed? presumably you prefer the mh format and so won't like mbox. But Alpine as a Uni/corporate mail client can be set up in so many ways although the layout is a bit dated. I don't know how but Alpine is extremely fast compared with any of the others Sylpheed I found the fastest of the GUI clients.
I use Alpine remotely as this suits xubuntu 6 month releases, and I still use the gmail UI other times - so the two sync quite well. Gnus is versatile too... but takes too long for me to sort out.
