I can find no way of getting this user account back to the normal menu system. Neither in Mandriva's control centre nor in the KDE one.

Any ideas?

Did you try: logout from kde && mv .kde .kde_bad && start kde?

If it's only a problem with the one user, there has got to be something wrong with the user's kde settings in .kde.
