Obviously cp /etc/X11/ /etc/Xll.bak/ doesn't work- there must be a simple way on the >command line- anyone know it?

Oh, of course, use tar and gzip:- tar cvfp - /usr/X11R6|gzip -9 > X11R6.backup.tar.gz

(posted cos I thought it might not be obvious to other newbies on the list- and so others don't have to reply to that part of the previous post- unless you think I'm wrong)
