If the program is using almost exclusively user mode CPU then it would suggest that the program has simpy got into an infinite loop due toa bug in the program.

Yeah, it shows 90+% user time. Only about 3% sys time. I tried an alternative kernel (no nvidia patch), same problem. I've filed a bug report for it. I'm pretty stumped at the moment.
