All,
I am looking for a portable device which I can use for uni which has the following features
1) SSh client 2) Qwerty keyboard 3) PCMCIA slot for 802.11b card
I have looked at either a cheap or second hand laptop running bsd or a compaq Ipaq or possibley somthing combled togther from PC104 boards. What would people suggest? It just needs to be reasonably cheap and have the ability to ssh into my shell account.
Thanks
D
Hi David,
The only thing I've managed to get working so far is SSH for my Nokia 9210 Communicator. Works very well even though it's a 9,600bps connection (although when my contract with BT Cellnet runs out, I'll be switching over to Orange which fully supports GRPS).
One thing to look for, then, is a Symbian OS 5 (or is it 6?) portable device, as that should then fully support SSH for Handhelds. I'm sure there are a few more devices out there other than the Communicator which support this OS.
Regards,
Martyn

Does anyone heard of better Linux support for communicating with this OS. The last I heard was that talking over the serial port worked so files could be transferred but that Symbian were refusing to provide information on the data formats used by their applications and the only application whose data format had been sucessfully reverse engineered was the word processor.
Steve.
Hi,
Unfortunately I've not heard anything with regards to connectivity under Linux. One can hope that Symbian will eventually see the light and release the specs for the various file formats. It's a shame, since I like the Nokia 9210 very much and now that it is SSH enabled (even though it will eventually cost me (or my employers) $149) it's become an even more valuable tool to me. It's the only PDA that I actually like using. The Palm Pilot was too just frustrating.
At last! No more on call duty carrying a separate mobile phone and bulky laptop computer around.
I've thrown together some photos of the SSH client in action on my web site at http://www.martyn-drake.info/mod.php?mod=userpage&menu=101&page_id=2. Some of the shots have come out a bit blurry, but you should be able to see the output of an 'ls' and 'top' (which refreshes quite well for a 9,600bps connection).

Martyn

There is the sharp sl-5000d pda - http://www.sharp.co.uk/pda/ It's only available to developers at present (I don't think there is a qualifier). It runs Linux natively and there was a large discussion on /. about it recently (can't find specific url as /. is down at present).
Of course, 'reasonably cheap' is in the eye of the beholder.

Before you switch to Orange check on what data rates you can expect with your GPRS. Even when it is supported, operators typically only allow one slot per cell. this means that your data rates will be even lower than they are now.

I would suggest that an iPAQ may not be the best way to go. I have one, but, to be honest, I just use it as an expensive toy to hack on.
The biggest problem you'd have with the iPAQ would be the keyboard. I have a foldup stowaway keyboard which works fine, but, it needs to be unfolded and placed on a flat surface for use.
Also, the iPAQ battery life is only a few hours and remember that you'll need to spend 90 to get the PCMCIA sleeve for your 801.11 card.
