I want to be able to use a backup provider for my internet access via dialup when I have problems with my current ISP (NTL).
Are there companies still around which do dialup internet access where you only pay for the phone call when you use it, and are member using such services? If so, please let me know who you use and why? I'm planning to use dialup as a backup instead of an ADSL line from someone else in order to keep the cost down.

(free in the sense that there's no subscription; but you pay for the 0845 call). However, I can no longer locate this service on their website.
Another thing is that many ISPs (e.g. Zen -- http://www.zen.co.uk ) offer a backup dialup as part of their ADSL package.

I used them for dial-up before GPRS became affordable. Now I use them for ADSL. Their sign up process for PAYG dial-up is completely self service.

It doesn't get much easier, does it!
