The laptop in question has but one serial port, which is needed for the external mouse. The modem cable has a double-end at the laptop end, with both a serial plug that fits and a parallel that doesn't as it is the wrong gender.

That'll be a 25 way serial port then not a parallel port. That's what they all used to look like until recently when they tend to all be 9 pin ones. Most of the pins in the 25 pin ones aren't used any more (or ever really especially for RS232).
