I nearly missed this in Linux Format today, so just in case any of you did too and haven't heard about from other sources...
Epson have released the drivers / UI for their scanners again, in a more GPL friendly manner.

And it works very well indeed too. All I need is to get my lexmark printer working properly (bought *just* before I decided to give linux a try) and I'll be a happy bunny

Epson have always been a very good supporter of free software, they gave all the specs on printers too the gimp-print project etc. so their equipment has always worked. Does this scanning application give you anything more than sane though? my scanner works fine with it so there is no need to move, unless I will gain something from it.

lots of the Lexmark printers now have a picture of a penguin on the box! well the cheap one we got at work the other day did anyhow.

I got my SCSI Epson GT-9600 working with SANE, and although it worked, the software was nowhere near as good as the windows Epson stuff. Really, it was night-and-day, so much so that I put the scanner back on a W2K box. If this new Epson software is good, I might give it another go, but it's a major effort to take the SCSI card out of the 'doze box, configure in in one of my Linux boxes, only to discover that I don't have all the whizz-bangs (like magnification on scan, for instance) in SANE.

Lexmark just announced a network capable 4800x1200 dpi colour inkjet for retail £199 inc VAT (Dabs £163.32), which I think warrants a look-see (it's the Z65n, BTW). Not sure about Linux drivers.
Cheers, Laurie.

My Epson perfection 1260 isn't supported in the normal SANE backend, but there is a 'third party' backend that gives partial support to it. Now it works properly though :-)

Haven't tried anything other than iscan (the epson one) and xscanimage. I'd say those two programs are comparible to each other. Both can preview, adjust the colours and iscan can magnify. I'd guess that XSane etc. would urinate all over it from a great height, although I haven't tried it yet.

Of course ;-) It's pretty basic so I think I'll have a look round for something better tmrw, I'm just happy about having the backend...

The last time I was browsing through the Argos catalogue I had to do a double-take when I noticed 'compatible with linux' mentioned under one of the lexmarks. Nothing on their site about retrofitting compatibility though, if you know what I mean...
