Yes, that turns out to be the problem, printf() is only in the very latest version of sqlite which isn't in the distribution I'm using yet.
Drat it - you've gotten me interested in using sqlite!
It's a very handy SQL implementation because you don't need all the setting up of server etc. that mySql and postgresql need.
