Can any of the Alug web team let me know what wiki system they use for the site - or is it one of their own devising?
I could do with something along those lines for a little project I am working on, and any other recommendations would be much appreciated.

Brett correctly identified phpwiki, which I'm not particularly impressed with, but it's not a bad wiki.
At the moment, kwiki (available in CPAN) looks one of the better systems to me. If you want to customise it heavily, brushing up on perl objects and subclassing/"use base" is a good idea, but there are examples and plugins for common tasks.
