I'm trying to get Thunderbird to connect to a fairly standard E-Mail account and I'm failing miserably at the moment.
The apparent problem is that I don't seem to be able to tell Thunderbird that the user name for both IMAP and SMTP authentication is user@isbd.co.uk. I've gone into manual setup for the account and changed the user name to user@isbd.co.uk but now when I tell Thunderbird to get mail it says:-
Enter your password for user@isbd.co.uk@mail.gridhost.co.uk
which is fairly stupid!
How do I get Thunderbird to allow me to set the user name to something which isn't <user>@<name of domain>? The correct mail server to use *isn't* related to the name of the domain where the user's mailbox is.
The domain for the user's mailbox is isbd.co.uk but the mail server (if you're using SSL) is mail.gridhost.co.uk.

I'm with you in having no taste for mail GUIS of the thunderbird (or Evolution, etc.) variety! I've tried them in the past on a suck-it-and-see basis, and have found them horribly tedious and obscure to set up.
That being said, I wonder if the Thunderbird response in fact reflects one of the more arcane features of the internet email addressing system. Namely, that an email address given as
user@this.dom.ain@host.that.dom.ain
forces mail delivery to user@this.dom.ain to be routed via host.that.dom.ain (and you can extend the chain), so this may just be thunderbird doing a "clever" act when it asks for your password (though I think, mind you, that even if it's being clever about the routing, it shouldn't feel that it has to tell you)!

Mine's set:
Incoming mail server 'mail.ISP.co.uk Outgoing mail srver 'smtp.ISP.co.uk
and it has a tickbox for requiring authentification
My username is my main e-mail address. the password is arranged between me and the ISP
These details will - or may - vary according to different ISPs' set-ups.
You *must* have a password the server will recognise...

No, that's completely correct... it's printing: username@server
your username is user@isbd.co.uk and the server is mail.gridhost.co.uk.
Where is your actual problem? Did you bother trying your password?

That's not what it's doing.
The domain for the user's mailbox is isbd.co.uk but the mail server (if you're using SSL) is mail.gridhost.co.uk.
Probably if you're not using ssl too. But then that would be silly.

Why? :-) It isn't an E-Mail address so why put the @ in there?

Yes, but I have to admit using the wrong one, usign the right one makes it work. If it hadn't been going on about zelma@isbd.co.uk@mail.gridhost.co.uk I'd have been more persistent.
Thanks for pointing out what Thunderbird was trying to do.
I still think it would be better if it said:-
Enter the password for zelma@isbd.co.uk on IMAP server mail.gridhost.co.uk

Why does ssh use username@server... or rsync... or http... or... <insert a myriad of services that take a username and connect to a server here>?
Because that's the normal thing to do, and what people expect, generally, through years of conditioning!
When it becomes fun is when you're sshing with an @ in your username... I leave it as an excercise to the reader as to how you go about that one.

I can't remember the last time I set up a graphical client that didn't give me a password prompt asking for user@servers password. In that form.
Thanks for pointing out what Thunderbird was trying to do.

Enter the password for zelma@isbd.co.uk on IMAP server mail.gridhost.co.uk
Look at all that screen real estate you're wasting! That's an extra 16 characters! And still not accurate, doesn't include the protocol version, or the port number!

It didn't prompt me for a port number - and if it had, I know it!

follow this trail. Starting at the Thunderbird main window select Edit, Preferences (new window opens) Select Advanced, then Config Editor (new window opens) Filter for hostname Edit the obvious incorrect entries Filter for username Edit the obvious incorrect entries
