I would get Mepis. Assuming you don't mind KDE. Installation is very simple indeed, and after 45 minutes, there you have it, a working Debian based installation with most of what you'll need, and Synaptic for the rest. And you get to try it out from the CD first, to make sure you like it, before going to the trouble of installing.
I did try Ubuntu, an earlier version, and didn't like it one bit. It may have improved, but the one I tried, last Christmas, was an utter dog. So at least if you try Ubuntu, make sure its the latest version.
I also failed, a long time ago, to get Woody in, no longer recall exactly why, but the latest version is pretty straightforward. Though not as simple as Mepis.

I'm comparing and contrasting suggestions ATM - but I have a 7 CD set of Woody, so I'm inclined to struggle with that to start with.
HD0/hda is in a caddy, so as funds permit, I could easily (well, fairly easily) try them all. However, it would seem sensible to run Ubantu and/or Knoppix from CD and use the apps from the Debian set.

I'm sure if you turned up to the meet this Thursday someone would bring along a sarge install CD for you. Definitely much more recommended than fighting with woody.

Would have to be next month - not even enough to buy a half-pint in the kitty ATM, so this week's out unless in the meantime I can find a gold mine or something in the back garden.
Well, I wouldn't complain too much if it was in the front...
Come to think of it, how big is the installer? Zetnet's got a Debian mirror 'cos one of the Zetgods is a developer. I'd be picking his brains, but there are big upheavals in the firm and his feet aren't touching the ground just now.
Hi Tony

I'll burn this Debian-Sarge-anaconda hybrid for you (589Meg with wine) and stick it in the post - All I need is an address to send it to...
No promises that it will satisfy your needs as it is based on my choice of packages. Nor do I promise it will work with the latest whizz-bang hardware. However, the installation is pretty painless and willl provide a Debian base that you can build on..
Regards, Paul.
