XMMS. X11amp is just a very old xmms.
Xmms 1.0.1 is fairly good.

Kmpg works fine, and it comes with KDE!
Finally I have never managed to workout mounting my floppy drive.
mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy (assuming it's a DOS disk)
Make sure you've created the /mnt/floppy directory

In XMMS (as X11amp became), you might need to make sure that it's using the right output plugin. I have "esd" selected for playing under Gnome, but you might find that you need OSS or ALSA, depending on your sound system. I have no idea how KDE's sound works now.

mpg123 (and graphical frontends like gqmpeg) is quite good. Actually, I think XMMS's mp3 player is based on it.

The problem with mpg123 is that you're not allowed to distribute modified source (or binaries?), which is a pain in the arse.

As far as I can tell, only modified source is excluded (although patches aren't, so you could do a modifying package, which makes a nonsense of the restriction IMO). It's like the Artistic with several clauses missing and aimed at keeping the author in control/informed. Almost certainly doesn't meet the OSD or DFSG, I'd guess.

Yeah, my problem was that I needed some code for a GPLd project which worked out bitrates of mp3s (see muse on www.earth.li/projectpurple) for a streamer.
I think I just found it somewhere else in the end, but mpg123 has by far the best mp3 player code under linux.
