(and my two penn'orth. None of the wrt applications could really be said to be suitable for newbies. Think about how they have to be acquired. Most ADSL users either use the router supplied by their provider, or (a smaller number) they will use a router bought at PC World. The kind of user who is prepared to install openwrt tends not to be at the newbie end of the spectrum).

Then many of these users come to someone that they know who "knows" about computers and asks them to setup their broadband in exchange for a couple of pints and some dinner as they still can't get them working properly. Now I think of this, i've eaten quite well and got quite drunk from doing this over the years, I must end up doing it at least every 2 months if not more often in the past 5 or 6 years.
Of course these people don't ask advice of which routers/hardware/provider they should get before they hand over the money.
