I had a similar problem when originally using an ALSA driver (from www.alsa-project.org) but the files were actually only the 44 byte WAV headers. How big are your files? Have you started a mixer and selected the microphone as the capture source? And the recording volume is up? Can you record from any other sources your card may have (eg line in)?

The file size increases with the time of recording about 8MB per minute.
I am running KMix and am using the line input socket on the card. Recording volume is at maximum. I put all recording sliders up to be on the safe side and there is sound coming out of the speakers.
