What distribution and version? Mandrake 9.1? Redhat 9.0? Something else? What errors are you getting? If no errors, what do you try that doesn't work?
i810 should be fairly straight-forward for ALSA by now (if not perfect), so hopefully this is a simple problem.

Hi
I am using Arch linux 0.6 I used set up as on ALSA website but I still get no sound...I have tried alsaconf (not pci sound so will not find it)......still nothing If I use Morphix lsmod gives me i810_audio ... ac97_codec & soundcore transferring soundcore does not work because it was compiled with gcc 2 not 3 as used by Arch..

Sorry for getting confused. There are at least two programs called "Arch" as well as the distribution and it being a popular word for Archimedes or architecture.
It looks like Morphix might be using the OSS/Free i810 driver, I think.
As on ALSA web site where? What exactly are you doing? Do you have a soundcore already on your Arch linux installation? Does "modprobe snd-intel8x0" not work for you? i810 looks PCI to me: the driver is in the sound/pci dir of kernel 2.6.
(Possibly interesting archlinux bbs thread at http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=2296&highlight=i810&sid=c52... )

Hi
Thread you have given is mine :-D ...soundcore is not in kernel drivers. I was told it was but I cannot confirm it.As for 2.6 I have no idea...If I could get hold of soundcore (for my kernel 2.4.24) it might help...

With 2.6, you can do things like "zcat /proc/config.gz | grep SOUND" to see if it's in the kernel (has a y by it), but I don't think that's in 2.4. On that bbs thread, they say it's in the kernel, so I guess we'll trust them. If you want to change that, you need to reconfigure and rebuild your kernel.
I'd find answers to these questions useful: Which ALSA web site instructions are you following? What happens/doesn't happen? What error does "modprobe snd-intel8x0" give, if any? If modprobe gives no error, have you unmuted the volumes in alsamixer or similar?

I am folloeing instructions for intel i810 adding code to modules.conf.modprobe snd-intel8x0 works no errors ....Have tried unmuting sound (pressing M)...I do get some sounds but they are very broken and happen only once then nothing...I am still thinking that soundcore is the problem....I am thinking of trying 2.6 what do you think..?

Well, the new kernels may have later versions in them, so if you're happy to build a kernel, it may cure it. I have a note in mine saying "the latest driver supports auto-detection of chip clock" which suggests earlier ones don't.
If I remember correctly, i810 is normally on-board. You might be missing some modprobe option for your particular motherboard. Searching ALSA lists, Google Groups and so on may help find it. There are some notes (lots on nForce2) at http://alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/doc-php/template.php?company=Intel&card...
Failing that, it's probably a case of bringing it to a meeting so that someone can hear the sound it makes when it fails to work and see if they can recognise the problem ;-)

Prior to that, you may like to read this:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml
I know it's G2-specific, in parts, but it's very informative, and may well help you.
Cheers, Laurie.
