Is it my imagination, or do older slower machines with little memory run a lot faster when using wdm or xdm than when running gdm or kdm? Its irritating, because what is really nice about gdm is the ease of remote terminal setup and auto start of apps....

I don't really see what the display manager has to do with "remote terminal setup" or "auto start of apps", are you sure you're not comparing Window Managers?

Yes. wdm and xdm use few external libraries, whereas gdm and kdm probably load most of their respective desktop libraries.
I've also heard of slim, which I've not tried yet. Has anyone?
