Has anybody had a play with XFedora on an Xbox?
I was given an Xbox, note that this is not a 360, and decided that I might be able to use it to play things DviX files which might be stored on this PC or on my wife's laptop. So I removed the original 10GB(?) drive and put in a 40GB drive which XFedora has used. I had also tried various other distros such as XDSL and Gentoox but they only seemed to install in an F: partition which I didn't want.
I have also installed a modchip so that it can now boot without needing a modded game cheat.
My query is this. XFedora appears to be running version 4 of Fedora so does anybody know if it would be possible, and worthwhile, to update it?
Before everybody jumps in and says that it's easy to update, I should point out that I don't currently have a mouse on the box as I only have one USB adapter and that's taken up with a keyboard. I have ordered another adapter but that's winging it's way over from China now. If I 'startx' the system comes up fine (I'm not yet clear on how I will want to play any files on the system but if my wife wants to do this, I don't think she'd be keen on running things from a command line and hence the possible need for X-Windows) but due to the lack of a mouse, I can't click on the Update icon on the taskbar.
I can connect it online and Firebird will reach the outside world but if I try to run 'yum grouplist', it can't find any repositories. I suspect that's because it's an old version. Am I right in that thought?
So if somebody could point out how I can manipulate X-Windows without a mouse, that would be good too.
P.S. If the moderator is reading this, apologies for sending it through first time from the wrong email address!
Chris,
Does your controller work as a joypad in the distro?
If so, you could use joymouse to use the joypad movements like a mouse:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/joymouse-linux
I have this setup, so I can use a joypad to control my desktop when I'm playing MESS / MAME games.
Peter.

Stop! XBMC time!
Seriously, just put XBMC on it and give up with this Linux faffery if you just want to use it as a media centre.

+1 for XBMC can't really beat it, should cut down your boot time as well.
I can't imagine the XBox would make much of a desktop anyway due to it's low RAM and CPU power, if media and a few emulators is all your after you should be happy with XBMC, MAMEoX. Best of all no keyboard or mouse required just the controller.

I'm not sure if some previous installation has screwed the modchip I've put in but it now comes up with a Gentoox ROM and that won't boot the XBMC disc I'm putting in so things are on hold at the moment while I resolve that. I've grabbed a copy of Auto-Installer.Deluxe.v4.40.iso and have tried installing that but with the problem shown.
I also have a remote control and I was hopeful that XBMC would be able to use and from what limited material I've read, I think it will. I could be proved wrong of course!

Not had any direct experience of hardware mod chips..all the xmbc installations I have been involved with have been softmods which is IMO the way forward.
However can you boot from one of the xbox boot cd's that offer an ftp server and then use that to replace default.xbe with the xbmc one...that should work.
The bootable dashboard cd's should be available in the usual places but if you get really stuck I can probably rustle up an ISO

Yes XBMC works perfectly with the stock xbox remote, in fact it is almost a necessity because usability goes right up when you have the remote buttons.

Thanks for that.
The iso I have also has lots of BIOS files and extras with it so I'm hopeful that one way or another I can fix the problem.

I want it to fit into a domestic environment (I might have to do something about the fan noise later) and so a remote control seems 'de riguer'.

t3ch is the build you want, maybe. GIYF.

Oh yeah, I replaced the fan too, much better :)

Buy a Xir from http://xir.us/ and you can power the xbox on and off with the remote.
Thanks Adam
