Does anyone please knoe gmix (the Gnome mixer) determines the type of sound card installed and which controls it has?

Gmix used to be identify my card correctly as an ES1371 and offer me a record level control, but not gmix thinks it is a Tritech??? and offers no such control. In the absense of the control the record level seems to be set permanently to zero!
