Hi all,
I'm going to publish this just as soon as we have the remaining dates, unless someone objects. Improvements are welcome. Note that the first Norwich discussion meeting has been pencilled in for next Sunday -- who's going to be there?
Many thanks to the venue organisers (Rob, John, James) for agreeing to dates so far ahead... hopefully we can get them into all the magazines, local papers, etc and won't have to vary them too much. The extra advance warning should help with promotion and attendances, too.
In other news, Peterborough LUG's meeting is this Thursday evening. They're having an "open forum" session, much like most of last year's ALUG meetings. Anyone from A47 or A17ish wanting a lift there and back, email me.
--- Begin draft:
The Anglian Linux User Group needs speakers and presentations!
We're interested to hear from anyone who wants to speak about a project they're involved in, or some other aspect of GNU and Linux that is of interest to the rest of ALUG.
It's hoped that we can have two types of talk at each venue: the first sort is an introductory type of talk, covering such things as what a piece of software or a project is, what it does, how to install it and get started using it, and so on; the second is a more "in-depth" technical talk aimed at "veteran" users who are interested in how things work and how to improve them. If there is interest, displays may also be offered for the time between talks, when practical help will also be available.
The venues have different facilities, including projection equipment, microphones and stages, so please wait for your talk's venue to be decided before preparing that multimedia extravaganza. It is expected that most talks will happen at the Syleham and Elmswell meetings, while the Norwich meetings will be more social discussions. The group is also always interested to hear from people with venues available for ALUG, especially in North Norfolk or Cambridgeshire.
Provisional Dates 2003:
* Syleham: 23 Feb, 18 May, 17 Aug (BBQ?), 23 Nov * Elmswell: 27 Apr + more (all TBC) * Norwich (all UEA unless stated): 2 Feb, 16 Mar, 4 May, 7 Jun, 20 Jul (not UEA), 24 Aug (not UEA), 5 Oct, 16 Nov, 11 Jan 2004 * YOUR VENUE HERE... email the list and propose it

Me! In the audience though. You couldn't get me to do a presentation if you held a gun to a cute kittens head.
Where abouts in the UEA is it pls? (and what time). And given that the only place I have been is the student bar[1], some directions too pls?
cheers,
BenE
[1] well, OK, I've been in the student accomodation too, but that involved getting chased by security (including vans) so I don't talk about it.
Hi,
I'm sure a talk could be arranged on Linux within the post-production and visual effects world at some point this year. I was going to do it earlier last year, but unfortunately things got a bit hectic.
If people are still interested in this topic and we can come up with a date in the not too distant future for a presentation at UEA (*and* assuming my employers is still willing for me to talk about this sort of thing), then I would be more than happy to come along to do something for Alug.
Regards,
Martyn

What about a page on the Wiki for people to request talks on subjects they are interested in learning about, and then others can show if they are also interested in those subjects too.
It would be nice to try and fill the needs of the audience rather than bore them with things they don't want to know about.

There's currently one for IntroTalks for talks of the first type. I invite everyone to go add, edit and shape the page, or splatter ideas into the mailing list and someone will hopefully summarise. Maybe someone should make a page for the more technical talks, although a good name eludes me.

Of course.

Great idea to have meetings organised well in advance.
BTW I noticed that the Norwich PC User Group had a talk on Linux last month, was anyone in alug involved?

I am hoping to attend alug meetings more frequently this year. Unfortunately this is just too short notice as we are already committed to a family visit this sunday.
* Norwich (all UEA unless stated): 2 Feb, 16 Mar, 4 May, 7 Jun, 20 Jul (not UEA), 24 Aug (not UEA), 5 Oct, 16 Nov, 11 Jan 2004
Do we have a venue for the non-UEA meetings?

I just hope that we don't have to move any of the dates!

Not that I'm aware of. I'm cc'ing their chairman to see if he knows about ALUG already and whether there's any scope for future occasional joint meetings. Do we have many people who are members of both groups?

I look forward to seeing you.

Yes, I was rather surprised when James started with such an early date, but it's his call. It gives us a chance to bounce meeting and talk ideas around before we've had too many offers.

No, not yet. Do you know of anywhere? Maybe one would be a good date to meet NPCUG? ;-) If all else fails, the Fat Cat is a good venue if the weather is good.
The Norwich meetings are actually intended to be less formal most of the time, because some people there said they wanted more frequent informal meetings. Also, we don't currently have a definite venue suitable for desktop computers and talks. I think I need to talk to J about UEA. More soon, hopefully. Sorry for this first one being a little "up in the air." Not the first time for an ALUG, I know, but it should be the last for a while.
We have an offer for a speaker about IPv6/IPNG, the replacement for the 1.2.3.4 style of network addresses, and how to support it with GNU/Linux. I'm assuming that it would be a technical talk -- is there interest?

Yes, very much so :) would save me having to get the basics of it worked out =)

Thanks, looking forward to it, especially as I am now using linux daily (Mandrake 9.0 on my laptop for almost all email and web browsing). Plus I have a 486 as a router/dial-up server using Freesco.

One of the stalls (if that is the right word - shed seems more accurate :) in Norwich market is internet access on an adsl connection. Possibly not suitable - possibly too expensive to hire. But should I enquire next time I am in Norwich? Don't suppose they would allow connections to their network though.
More realistically, the village hall in Newton Flotman where I live is often unbooked on sundays and is very cheap to hire. Tea making facilities but no internet access. On the A140 about six miles south of Norwich, three miles off the A47. May not be close enough to the city?
Re NPCUG, I am hoping to go to their next meeting (first wednesday in the month) and may join. Do we have any members in alug alraedy?

Actually, would an intro talk on the different options for routers would be interesting to many people? I think a lot of people use a special-purpose distribution for that task and they're not discussed as much.

That's been the problem with other computer cafes.

I know it. It's in fairly easy cycling range of Norwich in the summer, I think, but what's public transport like to there on a Sunday? Taxis cost much? I expect we can organise some carshares, but it's good to have another way to get there. Internet access is nice but not essential.

Bus service is poor. No doubt a lift for a few people from Norwich could easily be arranged. But the lack of response other Mark speaks for itself really, doesn't it?
