Hi,
Now that ClaraNet are offering an affordable "Wires-Only" ADSL package, I am thinking abou changing over to it. I'm getting fed up with a 56k modem download speed.
I want to use my linux machine as a firewall/router, as I currently do with the modem. Themachine has two network cards in it. The first is a 100Mb Linksys card which has the private network. The second is a 10Mb NE2K-PCI card which is currently unused.
I have been considering getting the Alcatel Speedtouch Home Ethernet ADSL modem. From reading the manual I beleive I can set it up so that my linux machine has the correct IP address for the outside world (using PPTP and PPP). I want the Linux machine to do the NATing, and not the ADSL modem. I do not want to use USB devices as they are too processor intensive, and I have had problems with USB on both Windows and Linux machines, I don't trust it as far as I could throw it.
Has anybody had any experience with setting up Ethernet ADSL modems?
Can you recommend any other devices than the one I've named?
Many Thanks
Chris

If you need to keep costs down, then the STHome would work, and I have heard of good success with Linux. Just one point, I would suggest a separate machine to act as a firewall/router for security, even if you need to dole money for out another cheap PC and network card.
Plus for even easier install, I think IPCop or Smoothwall can be configured to this setup.
Have a look at the post http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=linux&Number=... 07&page=&view=&sb=&vc=1#Post187807 for some hints.

There are others such as the Asus AM6000EV and the Speedtouch 510, but these would do the NATing instead and wouldn't present the outside IP address to Linux but work perfectly with Linux.
Have a look at www.adslguide.org.uk for further info, including their reviews section and the Linux forum.
Cheers.
David.

The ST Home is boring, but works as well as your USB does. Make sure you use the "Benoit" drivers rather than Alactel's (although you do need one file with the firmware for upload from those). There is one remaining slight bug if you totally disconnect and reconnect the modem (currently requires a reboot to clear), but that is gone in 2.4.19pre3 or later.
Now, if only my DSL was working for more than a week between faults... :-/
