I seem to remember this happening to me, there was an issue with PAM (password authentication) around RH6.0/1/2, which caused long timeouts whenever people logged in. I think this was fixed/resolved with one of teh updates, I can't remember which one though (probably pam!)... perhaps others on teh list might be able to clarify/confirm this...

Anyway, if you haven't tried applying the updates, give that a go ;)..
