Hello chaps
I have gotten hold of a Netgear MR814 and am trying to get it set up with my Tiscali broadband, using a Sagem F@st dsl modem.
Anyway, the problem I have is that the cable that currently goes from the modem to the PC ends with a USB wotsit, wheras the router needs it to be an ethernet one. Tiscali sell something called a RJ45 Network Cable (1) - is this what I need?
Also, I have been supplied with a USB wireless adaptor, but would plugging the router straight into the PC with an ethernet cable produce better results? (before you ask, the wireless is for my laptop!)
Thanks in advance
Dave

Unfortunately it is not as simple as changing the cable. You cannot use your USB modem with the router. You will have to get hold of an Ethernet modem. Using a cable connection to the router would probably give you a better, if not more secure, connection.

/me doesn't have much to say about Tiscali that is nice... They just couldn't supply me with a login and password that actually worked.

Can't say anything about the Sagem modem (if you want another one complete with filters, just holler).. I tried the Netgear DG632 (still wouldn't work with Tiscali) which is a simple modem/firewall. Found the one I had purchased new had a vintage firmware installed and was as buggy as hell.. Eventually, I settled on running ipCop and using a Thompson SpeedTouch 330 modem which worked first time. Not with Tiscali I might add...

Cable is always better for security, but it still doesn't solve the conectivity problem between the router and the phone line. Using a USB<->RJ45 adaptor is not going to work as the USB interface would normally power the modem, and if the modem needs any firmware uploaded, you'll be stuck if the router can't handle it.

work..period.
Dave,
Sadly you have a collection of incompatible hardware there.
Your choices are as follows (in order of my personal preference)
Get rid of the MR814 and ditch the modem...Instead obtain the Netgear DG834G (or similar from another manufacturer). This is the same device as you have now but with the Modem bit built in. You should be able to get one of these for about £60-75
Obtain a modem with a RJ45 connector. These are quite cheap..about £30 ish
Scrap the MR814...use a linux box with the USB modem (assuming drivers even exist) and the USB Wireless dongle in HostAP mode to be a Firewall/Router/AP...but then you are using a noisy PC to do what the little box in solution 1 can do (that said there is no reason your main PC couldn't be that machine if you don't mind having to have it turned on when you want to use the laptop)

SpeedTouch 330 definitely works with Linux - However, you do need to download a firmware file from the Thompson web site which worked for me straight out of the box (tarball ?)..
Googling around reveals there are drivers for the Sagem 800, most links appear to recommend going to www.eagle-usb.org for the latest - However, there does appear to be a far bit of work involved to get it to work..
All told, I would also recommend going the DG834 (or similar) route - The power consumption of many of these small modem/routers are a tenth of a desktop.

Oh yes I have been there....I had one of those (the old style blue frog thing) with the usermode drivers....then after having a few strange bugs I eventually moved to the kernel drivers...Then I moved to 64bit (which the Alcatel drivers didn't like very much) so I bought a router.
It's also possible to get the Conexant AccessRunner PCI ADSL modem working quite well....They are pretty cheap and seem to work better than the USB modems...They are quite difficult to set up initially though.
