I want the lurkers to speak up. We have 250 addresses getting copies of this. Even if we assume that all the meeting venues get different people (definitely untrue IMO), that means we only see about three dozen of them to talk with. How do we get the other seven-eighths involved?
Alright, then! I didn't think I had anything useful to add to this thread, but because MJR wrote the above and I have a lot of respect for what he writes, I'll attempt to add in my tuppence.
Why don't 'the others' get involved? I can only share my experiences. I run a Linux system, from which I have learnt a lot but I've only scratched the surface, as things go, and I still need lots of help. One area in which I really do need help just now is in getting a good video card. I posted a message about this and, when I saw all those digests waiting to be read earlier today, I felt sure that the answer to my question would be in there.
But no! Nothing! What? Does nobody else on this list use a video card? Or have I not used the correct incantation to get a response? So how come no-one had ANYTHING to say on this subject?
Now this isn't, by any means, the first time I've had this experience on this list. Maybe I'm not alone (I'll assume that I'm not singled out for this treatment), so if others have had this experience with ALUG (or any LUG, really), then maybe it's not so surprising that lots of would-be members don't participate as much as would be desired.
Right - I suppose you'll want to excommunicate me after that contribution....
Cheers,
Gerald.

Ok, Ok, I will answer your question on video card :) I will explain in that reply why you didn't get a response from me on that subject.

I've got no idea which card I have in mine, and the only driver I can find is a bog-standard Samsung VGA one on an installation CD with other gismos.
Did you say why you wanted a different card and what constitutes 'good'?
When I got the bits for the box I said that games would *NOT* be played on it, so I wanted good cards, but not super-expensive ones capable of coping with quickly-changing and detailed graphics, so (I'm only guessing here) I'm probably not really able to help, even by excavating under the desk and disembowelling my box to find out.
Now this isn't, by any means, the first time I've had this experience on this list. Well, every time I've raised my hand and whimpered plaintively everyone's rallied round and solved my current problem. Whether this will continue as I get more proficient at finding really complicated ones, only time will tell.
Right - I suppose you'll want to excommunicate me after that contribution....
That rather depends on how much of this batch of beer is left for me once the List has had a goat at it......

I think that is unfair. This generaly an extremely helpful and supportive group. If you have not had replies to your queries it is most likley because no one knows the answer. I have often posted questions to newsnet groups and not had a reply or worse unleashed a stream of invective. in no way do nI feel singled out for this treatment it is just the luck of the draw. Keep trying.

Sorry about that; the para was buried deep in a posting and I was conscious when I sent it that I was unsure who originaly posted that para.

lspci or "cat /proc/pci" is sometimes the easiest way to find out.

Since found the handbook and CD - it's an ATI.
So far, no problems, though it han't had anything complicated to do yet.
However, I'll save the info for later, when I'm sure to need it. Ta.
<little jig>
Also found the SCSI card upgrade drivers I've been looking for for ages.

Most likely, your question wasn't precise enough (seen ESR's paper about "smart questions"?) and no-one likes their graphics card so much they'd recommend it for everything. For example, of the three I have here now, the ageing Riva128 works relatively reliably but occasionally gets in a pickle over DPMS, the on-board SiS can be convinced to work well but is nothing special, the on-board Nvidia in the newest machine is absolutely terrible and crashes X sometimes when DPMS kicks in. I think the i810 in an old office machine was competent once drivers were available for it (but I had it before that *sigh*), but I've not been really happy with a video card since a Cirrus that was my first colour card many many years ago.
