I occasionally have a similar problem with Slackware, (It happened again only yesterday), the computer does'nt 'see' the printer, I think it is that the USB plugs are'nt a very good fit. I usually have to unplug, re-plug, (and wiggle), and then reinstall, (sometimes up to five or six times before the computer 'sees' the printer and it succesfuly re-installs.
