I'm currently running minidlna as a DLNA server and it's fine except that it doesn't offer transcoding. I now have a client that doesn't understand FLAC so I need on the fly conversion of FLAC to MP3.
Can anyone suggest a DLNA server that can do this?

Probably not helpful but Firefly can transcode but: a) it's not a DLNA but an DAAP server b) it's not maintained any more.

ps3mediaserver is very configurable and has gone beyond its PS3 roots, if it doesn't directly support or happen to magically pick up your particular client then you can copy and modify one of the existing configs.
Only potential downside, as the client you were using has 'mini' in its name, is that it's Java. I usually leave it running via VNC but I think it has a headless mode.

OK, thanks, I'll add it to my list of possibles.
I've been looking through the list at:-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_UPnP_AV_media_servers
but actual user experience is always a plus.
The mini'ness of minidlna isn't incredibly important, I'm actually running it on a fairly capable machine. However I do like being able to fire up at system start-up automatically and it just being a background task.

It seems that mediatomb (http://mediatomb.cc/)can do this. See:
http://mediatomb.cc/pages/transcoding (Section 2.1)
I use mediatomb, and it's not too shabby. No bling, but it seems to work.
Cheers, Laurie.
