ALUG Announce
Please send announcements to Announce@lists.alug.org.uk Unsub, change settings via http://lists.alug.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/announce ----- The second of the new monthly "Third Monday" ALUG Ipswich Social Meetings starts at 20:00 on Monday 19th March:
The Milestone Beer House 5 Woodbridge Road IPSWICH IP4 2EA
Tel: 01473 252425 Map/Directions URI: http://maps.google.co.uk/?q=IP4+2EA
The Milestone pub is in the centre of Ipswich, near the now-defunct Odeon cinema and not far from The Regent Theatre.
There is more information on the venue, including car parking info, on the ALUG wiki:
http://www.alug.org.uk/wiki/moin.cgi/Meetings
As mentioned at the first meet, I'm going to be suspiciously absent thanks to my work forcing me to stay overnight in London. My second in command was due to step-in but has, unfortunately, been unavoidably waylaid by a bargain last-minute skiing trip. Grrr ...
Anyway, Venura who has been an attendee since the ... well ... last month ... ;) ... will be along to make sure no Gnome/KDE fistfights break out.
I'll leave Venura with my laptop and some conversation-starting material, but otherwise the format will remain fairly loose, like last time.
All are welcome, both novices and experienced users, especially those already involved with ALUG. Hopefully, it shouldn't be too hard to find the pack, look for those huddled around a laptop!
Feel free to ask for further information on the Main ALUG mailing list.
Hope to see you there,
Peter.

Drat - forgot it was on. Hope to be able to make it next time,
Greg
Guys,
Apologies again for not being there in person ... my work sux .. !
From what I've heard, it sounds like you all had fun, anyway ... and
Venura stepped in and has dutifully provided some notes on the wlki. Judging from that entry, it sounds like I should be counting myself lucky that my laptop was returned with ubuntu still installed ... :)
I was amused to hear that y'all had the same first impression of Beryl that I did too. Lot of work for rather pointless eye candy ... :)
I was glad to hear about the IRC involvement - I'd thought about trying that out before, but wondered if it might be a bit too geeky to pull out the laptop for that in a pub. If everyone reckons it was popular enough, tho, we can keep doing that ... it might also help us to encourage communication with members across the region and get people meeting online as well - I know a few people who don't really know that much about IRC.
Sadly Venura forgot to show you the other pre-installed goodie I sent him - the new SDL build of MAME, which emulates old arcade machines including classics like Galaxian, Golden Axe etc. I think you might have spent longer on those than Beryl ;) ... not to worry, we have the kit meet in Syleham coming up.
Speaking of which, offer repeated again - I have three booked in my car on Apr. 1st at the moment, so still room for anyone else coming from Ipswich who needs a lift.
Peter.

It was a little entertaining to drop in on a live pub meet without having to travel - Perhaps setting up a web cast would be the next step....

That reminds me.... Got some new & unused motherboards to dispose of..
Regards, Paul.

heh ... and it's a frightening coincidence that our meet times match the official ALUG IRC monday meetings!
I had been wondering whether we could setup a java applet or something which could be used to allow people to join the IRC channel without running a client. Not looked into the complexity or security issues of that, though ... and I figure I've been quite pushy enough about the website so far ... perhaps I should let the dust settle first. :)
What I had also thought I might do was create a wiki page for ALUG suggestions ... where people could brainstorm ideas about useful improvements on what is already in place, and new ideas like this. That could be a useful record of feedback for people who "own" components like the website, the library, the planet etc. as well as giving people who are bored somewhere to go to see if they can find anything they might want to play with.
Unless anyone has any objections, I'll probably add that ...
Peter.

The only real problem is that the Java applet will only talk to the webserver it was served from, and we're not the sysadmins incharge of the server, and I'm not sure they'd appreciate us forwarding connections over to a real ssh server.
Will take a look at what's available when I've got some tuits though, preferably some round ones!

Sounds like a plan type wassbob.
Hi again, Brett.

Well, I don't think this should be an issue. We've put the responsibility of content creation back to all ALUG members, so I hope now that those who have taken on the role of administering the ALUG site can concentrate on that. Specifically, if there's a lack of privileges issue then that needs fixing - either by requesting greater access from the current hosting provider or by moving the ALUG site; there are a number of other free hosting options which could be considered. Groups don't get much geekier than LUGs, so if we can't sort out control of our own website, people will just make fun of us. ;)
Sounds like a plan type wassbob.
And, a bit later than planned, DONE! ...

I've added the various suggestions which I've discussed both on and off the list with various people.
Should be easy enough for people to add their own and/or action any of the ones already on there. It should also be easy to add any other components I may have missed.
Hope that's of use,
Peter.
