After my dodgy HD, I'm thinking of buying a new HD. My motherboard can only handle ata33, but I'm thinking if I invest in a new HD, I might as well get an ATA100 one and use it at the lower speed- I'll probably buy a new motherboard (&new CPU, etc) that can in a year or so anyway.
Am I right in thinking that ATA100 hd's will work on a ata33 board?

Yup.
Well I've just tried an ATA100 on an ata33 board and it hung in the BIOS. No ways could I get it to boot.

Very odd .... I'm using a toshiba UDMA100 on DMA(33) machine just fine.
