I feel I must remonstrate with the members of this list (I'm lead to understand that they can't touch you for it :o) ). To date no-one on this list has mentioned that most excellent piece of Gnome eye-candy - GKrellm. For shame and even tsk tsk, ALUG ;o)
I had to rely on a mention on Slashdot to draw my attention to this and downloaded a copy last night.

You mean you haven't finished reading the ALUG list archives yet? ;-) http://lists.alug.org.uk/main/2001-June/009072.html I'm surprised it's not on the site's contrib area yet. I'll add it in a bit.
I thought GKrellm was GTK only, so even Gnomophobes can use it without too much pain.

Yep, it works fine on my (KDE) desktop. Very pretty indeed.
Personally however I will stick to lcdproc as I have more "real world" desktop space than "computer world" desktop space and lcdproc connected to a 4/20 display salvaged from a broken handheld serial terminal gives me all the information I need.
Speaking of which I have a spare 2/16 display (salvaged from a 3com ISDN bridge). free to someone who promises they will play with it rather than stuffing it in a drawer as I have done. I'll even chuck in a suitable wiring diagram to connect it to your parallel port.
It's a bit small for lcdproc to be honest, a 4/20 is much better.

I must admit to using it! I can't remember when I discovered it but it wasn't all that long ago. I got it mainly for displaying CPU temperatures and cooling fan speeds and to initiate an automatic shutdown in the event of overheating.
I've now added UPS monitoring to it's display. Everything else is turned off. There seems to be so much that can be displayed I feel that if everything was showing the bottom of it would be dragging on the floor!
