Yes, I'll be happy to completely clean out all the x stuff and start from scratch. Will I do that via apt-get remove [stuff with x before it] or just delete /etc/X11 and contents, or do i need the dreaded dselect to find out what has been put where? This sort of thing has me flapping about like it was two years ago - I can't tell whether or not part of the x system is v3 or v4. Yours Uselessly Jen.

dpkg -l will let you know what you have installed atm, look for things that mention X, I think there may be a package xfree86-common which if you remove that it will remove most of the other things too. Then apt-get remove things, although what will happen is it will also try and remove things like your window manager etc. don't delete /etc/X11 that would be a last resort!
