Well, my desktop computer (not the one with the wierd inode set) lasts about 2-20 minutes before locking up (does this in GNU/Linux AND Win2k), and although I'm now runnning memtest86 (it did this about a year ago, and I had to change 1 of my DIMMs from slot 2 to the third slot and it worked), I guess the poor little motherboard et al need to be put into retirement after a few years of (quirky) service.
I'm guessing it's a RAM problem- could be CPU or even the video card (not the hd's cos Linux and win2k are on different drives on different ide slots, and I have tried each by removing the other totally from power and ide cable, tried different cables too).
But my real question is; does linux now support ATA100? If so, anyone know which kernel? Will I have to add an hdparam line to LILO, or will it detect it autoimatically? I'll be running Debian Woody on it. Also, I shall be buying the new DDR RAM, does linux fully support this too? Also, does it now support the AGP 8x slot as well?
(incidentally, memtest86 has been stuck on test 4, however this is a test that should take long compared to the others....)
For sale: one grandmother, will swap for new PC.;) lol
TIA

ATA100 just works out of the box, well it has done for me, AGP 8x is a bit more complex in that it will work but not at 8x as there doesn't appear to be any drivers for it yet (the via kt400 chipset anyhow) but then seeing as 8x doesn't really make a difference over 4x this is not so much of a big deal.
As Keith said btw, check your psu this is an interesting article on the subject http://www4.tomshardware.com/howto/20021021/index.html also is your cpu overheating? it could be that the heatsink is loose or the thermal compound has been applied incorrectly. Perhaps try running something to get the cpu to 100% and see if it will reliably lockup then.

Well, initially I thought it was overheating, since I have that computer on for about 12 hours a day. I've checked the heatsink, it seems ok. More recently, however, it's dying quicker and quicker- this morning it lasted a good 2 minutes 20s (yes, I timed it!) after the Gnome loaded until it froze. Yesterday it froze as the Gnome screen was loading! But then after a reboot I used it for a good 30 min before it went.
Hmm yes, the PSU could be a problem, altho the memtest86 results are intriguing. It is also strange that I had exactly the same problem a year ago.Interestingly, I have moved them back to the original configuration of RAM in slots 1 and 2, and memtest86 *hasn't* frozen, which maybe does suggest the mobo isn't the cause. hmph.
Saying that, I don't have enough drive bays to add a cd-rw drive, so maybe I'll get that new case (with new PSU, therefore) after all! Thanks for the link. I love that site. Now.. mid or full tower? heh heh heh ;)
I just checked and apparently the nvidia drivers now include 8x AGP support, so I presume they mean in their kernel patch...

It doesn't work if you have an Nvidia Ti4200 8x AGP card on the via kt400 chipset though, trust me on this I know =) although if you disable AGP altogether the card will work fine. Although without AGP unreal tournament 2003 is quite slow so I am back to games in windows for the moment =)
(this may be wrong if there are newer drivers released in the past day or two btw)
