Hi, Ive just got a new computer with win 2000 installed. Its also got alot of specialist software and device drivers(not avalible for linux) so im keeping it(i also like it its the only version of windows i can say that about).
So my problem is that i dont want to re-install windows 2000 on a smaller partition unless i have REALY have to. If there were a version of fips or somthing similare then id maybe resize it so i could fit a smallish "/boot" partision. The boot partition needs to be in the first 8 Gig if i remember correctly or is that just older computers/drives? I do have a spare hd lying around not doing much but i seem to remember theres a problem getting linux to boot fromt he second ide controller, am i wrong?
Also is there anyproblems booting win2000 with lilo? Same as win98 right?
Thanx girls/guys =)

Ah! snap been going round this loop myself on and off over the past few months.
I think that you're right about not needing a /boot partition with newer large drives but I've always set my distro's up with one to be on the safe side.
Quick answers
a) yes, W2K boots fine with lilo, I let Debian generate the lilo.conf entry for me and it works fine.
b) having problems myself getting lilo to boot from the 2nd IDE
I'd assumed that (b) was down to my lack of expertise with lilo! :o( be interested to know if there's a known problem (must admit I haven't even looked in the docs).
At present I'm using a proprietary boot manager installed in the 1st IDE MBR, which works fine. I suppose I could replace this with lilo but it's a bit of a security blanket for me at the moment so I'm reluctant to do that.
Had though of having a play around with grub to see if that might be more suitable, anyone got any strong opinions one way or the other?

My system works flawlessly. i have 3 hd's with only one on the main channels. simply (with linux running from hde) run not lilo -v but add the device tag. lilo -v -b /dev/hda the data goes in MBR, so you dont need a boot partition. a boot partition is only there so you dont zap to boot files if they're in your main / tree. Or if you're setup is weird. WinBlows in this case is defaulted to i can boot it with a USB only keyboard. winXP pro shits itself if it has a ps/2 and a usb keyboard (keyboard is a ms net pre, usb hub. lilo wont read usb, and ps/2 wont run the hub...) /etc/lilo.conf <code start>
prompt lba32 delay=50 timeout="50" install=/boot/boot-menu.b map=/boot/map menu-title="Boot options" default=WinBlows append=" hdc=scsi hdd=scsi" boot="/dev/hde" root=/dev/hde7
image="/boot/bzImage.19" label="Gentoo-current" read-only
other=/dev/hda1 label="WinBlows" table=/dev/hda

Partition Magic will resize your Win2000 (NTFS or FAT) dirs quite nicely. It's not free but if you faithfully promised to not copy or redistribute the disks you could borrow my copy (I am firmly against software piracy, but also don't see why you should have to buy this for just one job)
Mail me off list if you need it (but I am out of the country for a week from tomorrow night)

Because the EULA says that you have to buy a seperate copy for each machine that you run the program on, thats what you agreed to when you purchased the software. The joys of non-free software.

Actually the EULA on my copy of Partition Magic doesn't say that, but I know where you're comming from :o)
I have a single concurrent use license, I can use it on any machine within my organisation as long as I only run one instance at a time.

You could use the nt boot loader to boot Linux see the nt boot loader howto
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/mini/Linux+NT-Loader.html
it works quite well if you don't mind booting Linux with a non free loader.

Something called k3b has been recommended to me in private email, but I can't find the website to download it from. Anyone know where to find it?

However, since you are using SUSE.... rpms I should think rpmfind.net
Use gcombust, gtoaster etc etc.. there are so many.

CDRecord seems to be the 'standard' CD burner s/w. It's a command line tool but there are any number of GUI front ends. Go to sourceforge and do a search.
