I'm running Debian Testing and I did an update yesterday. I think one, or more, of the packages was X related. I really can't remember any more than that.
One of the new packages was updated source code for my kernel which is 2.4.19. I compiled and installed that.
When I rebooted and started KDE, my normal desktop, the whole machine froze after a short time. Absolutely nothing worked. I have the magic sysrq key option in the kernel activated but even that did nothing. Only a hard reset would work.
I tried booting using my previous kernel with the same results so I've ruled out the new kernel.
I have since tried Icewm,as it's less complicated than KDE, and it appears to work after a fashion. I am writing this with my normal email application running under Icewm.
There is a 'but' of course. If I try to switch consoles using <ctrl><alt><Fn> the machine locks up immediately as before. If I try to exit Icewm the machine locks up even if I exit using <ctrl><alt><backspace>.
I am assuming that this is an X problem.
I have no idea where, or how, to start looking and some advice is sorely needed and would be very welcome.

not quite....
I have no idea where, or how, to start looking and some advice is sorely needed and would be very welcome.

you have 2 gfx cards? it looks like the Matrox one is being made default. This is maybe what you want or not I can't tell =)

at this point its trying to load an external module that is not there, but it tries to default to something else (possibly a builtin module but I can't tell too much more)

when you built your new kernel did you build in DRI support for your matrox card? what about the ATI card?
In this situation I would think about removing one of the cards from the machine, rebuilding the kernel with the DRI support if that is something that you want/need. Then I would reconfigure X from scratch and try to get it running with only one card, once you have that you can look at adding to your configuration maybe.
I will try and take a longer look for you this evening when I am home, but I do have to rebuild my machine first...

not quite....
I have no idea where, or how, to start looking and some advice is sorely needed and would be very welcome.

you have 2 gfx cards? it looks like the Matrox one is being made default. This is maybe what you want or not I can't tell =)
Not exactly. There is an ATI video chip on the main board which I don't use as it's not as good as the Matrox G400. It has always been so.

at this point its trying to load an external module that is not there, but it tries to default to something else (possibly a builtin module but I can't tell too much more)
I don't know about an external module but nothing has changed on the machine except a Debian Testing update.

What's DRI support? The kernel configuration hasn't changed. The kernel source update appeared to be a very minor one. 2.4.19-something to 2.4.19-somethingelse.

I obviously can't remove the onboard chip and I don't want to remove the G400 especially as it's been working well for months and months.

Thanks very much for your reply. I hope my replies have cleared up some of the points.

can you disable the onboard (ATI) video in the Bios? If you can I would *really* recommend doing this.
I don't know about an external module but nothing has changed on the machine except a Debian Testing update.
the external module is a part of X windows to allow additional capabilities for specific cards, it was complaining it couldn't find a module but appeared to carry on so it may not be needed for starting X. I don't know anything about Matrox cards as I have no experience with them.

Direct Rendering Infrastructure, http://dri.sourceforge.net/ you may not need it.

but you hopefully can disable it =) if you have a spare monitor around you could even use it to go dual head and have two displays =)
It is possible that either the new Debian X packages are broken, or perhaps don't have the matrox drivers included etc. etc. I would try looking online a configuration guide maybe. Failing that/also you should perhaps look on the Debian mailing lists and possibly look to see if anyone else has reported this as a bug etc.
One other thing to check is to see if the upgrade replaced your X config file it lives in /etc/X11/ and is called XF86Config-4

There are no signs of anyone else reporting problems so I shall have to assume that there's nothing wrong with the packages.

I have since tried my old, very little different, XF86Config-4 but with no change. I have also reconfigured the xserver package with also no difference.
I'm stumped. I was stumped when I started so that hasn't changed either :)
It does appear that the magic sysrq key combinations work when the system appears normal but trying to change to another console, <ctrl><alt><Fn> locks the system up solid and the sysrq combinations then no longer work.
Can anyone offer any pointers as to what to try next please?

Faulty hardware? or maybe the Bios version on your graphics card is old and perhaps has problems with the newer version of X, maybe the Bios on the motherboard needs updating also, Is the card agp or pci?
I would try taking out the Matrox now and try getting X working with the Ati card to try and discount it being anything else wrong with the system.

I get similar messages and X works fine on my system:
(--) Chipset mgag400 found (II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a (II) Module vgahw: vendor="The XFree86 Project" compiled for 4.1.0.1, module version = 0.1.0 (**) MGA(0): Depth 24, (--) framebuffer bpp 32 (==) MGA(0): RGB weight 888 (WW) Warning, couldn't open module mga_hal (EE) MGA: Failed to load module "mga_hal" (module does not exist, 0) (II) MGA(0): Matrox HAL module not found - using builtin mode setup instead(--) MGA(0): Chipset: "mgag400"
I did notice the following though:
(==) MGA(0): Using AGP 1x mode
I too have recently upgraded the kernel and it seemed that X had slowed down but in the end I thought it might be my imagination. Seeing this I am wondering because I think it should be a 2x AGP card.
On mine it seems to disable DRI for lack of memory:
(--) MGA(0): Virtual size is 1600x1200 (pitch 1600) (**) MGA(0): Default mode "1600x1200": 229.5 MHz, 106.2 kHz, 85.0 Hz .... (==) MGA(0): Default visual is TrueColor (EE) MGA(0): Static buffer allocation failed, not initializing the DRI (EE) MGA(0): Need at least 22500 kB video memory at this resolution, bit depth
What's DRI support? The kernel configuration hasn't changed. The kernel source update appeared to be a very minor one. 2.4.19-something to 2.4.19-somethingelse.
I am running 2.4.20-pre10 and it's working fine.
I am not sure how much help this is but hopefully some.
Steve.

Adam was right about not ruling out the kernel. The problem appeared to be caused by the new kernel code update.
In order to rule out as much as possible I decided to go back to my previous kernel source, recompile including modules, and reinstall. Everything was back to normal. Problem went away.
I recompiled the new kernel source, including modules, and after installing it the problem was back.
I am now running my older kernel and there has been no recurrence of the problem. As the kernel source code was, apparently, only a minor upgrade I don't know what went wrong.
Thanks for your advice Adam.
