Hi Folks, Sorry for possibly irritating cross-posting!
Fairly recently, on one of the Linux lists I read, someone (or more than one) made suggestions about good brands of USB sticks, with particular reference to lifetime under repeated cycles of writing, and general reliability.
Unfortunately, I can't now find that discussion in my archives, and I've forgotten where I read it! Hence my shouting from the rooftops.

When you do find it, could you share the information (or a link to it) with the ALUG wiki, please?
Dane-Elec USB (soft-sheen case with cap - I think the same thing is sold with a big brand too, maybe Sony) are too slow for PVR use. I can report back about PNY Attache later if anyone cares.
There are a lot of suspiciously-similar sticks out there (for example Integral at Dixons and Play.com's own brand). Are they imported as whole sticks, or just assembled into imported cases, d'you think?
I'd be particularly interested in the performance of "recycled" "Eco" sticks and on the power and noise of USB bus-powered hard drives. I'm going to be writing a bit more on this over the next few months.

I've got a 1 Gig SanDisk, a 1 Gig and a 2 Gig Peak, and a 2 Gig Kingston DT Mini (which last I keep losing, despite hooking it to a safety-pin and pinning it inside pockets, etc.. Indeed, recently I lost it for weeks, and only found it as I was hanging out some washing...)
All work OK AFAIAC, even in the last instance, after going through the wash. HOWEVER - I'm probably not a good judge about speed as my main box runs only at 900 MHz
I intend formatting the Kingston to LFS and using it on the Eee. However, until I get another one, I won't be able to compare it with anything.

Do you mean hard disk drives, or solid state?
