Yes, according to /. MS have a knowledgebase article that warns about the problems of large user groups.

I quote; " If a user group contains more than 500 users, the hair colour of the "person" .... changes to grey. This does not affect the functionality of the group or the users for whom the hair colour ... changes. This issue affects built-in groups, local groups, and global groups."
