My laptop has 3 extra function keys, one brings up the default email client, Evolution on this Ubuntu box the other two are marked for the default web browser and default media player, however they do nothing at present. I expect these would launch Outlook, IE and WMP in Windows. What I would like is that they are remapped to volume up/down and mute. What is the best way to do this? Ubuntu 9.10 Gnome with pretty much everything set at defaults, no compiz or any such trickery.
Cheers, BJ

Do they produce output in xev ?
In which case you should be able to just map them to the functions you want in (preferences) (keyboard shortcuts)
If they don't then you need to have a hunt for specific support for your laptop, what make/model is it ?

The email and web buttons do but the media player button has no effect. I mapped the other two to vol up and down using system prefs | keyboard shortcuts in the gui now I just need to find out why there is no input from the media player button.

The laptop is a Clevo model M76T I bought it sans operating system from eBuyer, its a great laptop really quick and everything else has just worked in Ubuntu. It would e great if I could just hit a single button instead of doing fn+f3 which currently assigned to XF86AudioMute.
Might be hardware related but I doubt it.
