Not sure. I don't understand most of it. :¬( However, I've reinstalled it using a named (recommended) driver and it seems to recognise it a bit more but I get tray 2 load letter messages. Tray 2 looks absolutely fine (not broken or anything - I've googled this one and had another look through Ubuntu community docs.) Anyone else come across this? And how would I check for error messages since it's a parallel port printer?

That error means you have asked it to print a US letter size document and it is only loaded with A4
Take another look at your printer configuration on the machine and set the default page size to A4
