Because the BBC programmes play back so badly if I watch them online I thought I'd try installing the desktop version of iplayer. However, towards the end of the process a message comes up saying 'Enter password for default keyring to unlock.' I had thought this would go away eventually but it hasn't. Googling tells me that this is used for wireless connection but of course all I wish to do is download a programme and I'm not able to. What do I do? Thanks.
Bev.

'Enter password for default keyring to unlock.'
Sounds like Gnome Keyring, and something wants to store a key on it.
Any other ideas?

When I installed this just the other day, I got asked for the my user password to allow permission to install the iPlayer desktop - could it be the same? Anyway, I think more info is required. Is the password requested during installation of the iPlayer, or when downloading a program. What version of Linux etc?
Cheers Steve

It comes up during installation (some time after it has first requested my login password so I think this one is different) and when I try to download a programme. I'm using Ubuntu 8.04LTS.

The wallet can hold just about anything and is used to hold "secure" info rather than using a config or .rc file. It stores info in the wallet each time you run it so it can keep track of what programs should expire. (or so I am led to believe). When it asks to open the wallet just give it your password. I think there should be a check-box to say "remember this" so it shouldn't need to ask again.
Well it worked for me anyway.

Remove the contents of ~/.gnome2/keyrings/
You will be prompted for you wireless key on next logon and hopefully you won't be bothered again.
Worked for me in Ubuntu 9.10 beta your mileage may vary, normal disclaimers apply.
Cheers, BJ

I've had a look for that but can't find it. Any ideas?

Tell me if I am stating the obvious but it really isn't.
But you are aware that .files are hidden so looking for it won't work without the magic ls option or pressing CTRL-H in the gnome file browser (Nautilus) or just cd'ing to it even though it isn't visible.
Well, I have it installed and working now (without any passwords) but even though I've unchecked the box and saved the settings it /keeps/ starting up when I login to my computer. Help please.

on mine I went to "Settings" and unchecked the "Run BBC iPlayer on computer startup" button
<<on mine I went to "Settings" and unchecked the "Run BBC iPlayer on computer startup" button>>
I did that, Nev, and still it runs on start up. :¬/ I found this, though it relates to windows:

It illustrates the difficulties nicely however...

Unfortunately that article is out of date. iPlayer doesn't use Kontiki or p2p anymore.
Tim.
Another suggestion that may be of use would be this:
http://po-ru.com/projects/iplayer-downloader/
Seems to work relatively well, and makes life a lot easier if you know you won't have time to watch something in the timeframe alloted on the site.

Or
http://linuxcentre.net/getiplayer/
Which I find to be slightly better (with the flvstreamer modules it can get the flash player stuff as well, does a wider selection of content..used to do C4, ITV and Five as well but support has been removed for some reason)
It's also a bit cleverer in that it knows what it has downloaded already and can do plain text searches against content titles..So you can have a cron job that tells it to look for "Doctor Who" and everything relating to Dr Who will magically appear in your download location as it is made available.
as it comes it is cli only...but usage is pretty straightforward.

...or if you don't have Ruby installed, but do have Perl, then you can try get_iplayer.pl from http://linuxcentre.net/getiplayer/ now including a web interface that makes it trivial to use and allows you to schedule PVR recordings overnight (good for me because my bandwidth is free from 00:00 to 08:00).
