I'd recommend an IBM. I've had Linux running on a number of Thinkpads and it's been rock solid. They're not the best laptops for their price in the world, but Linux loves them, and they're built like tanks. I dropped one from a fair height once, and except for a small crack in the LCD screen it worked without a problem.
