What that LinuxUK/SmoothWall comment was about.
Date: Tue, 5 Dec 2000 11:00:45 +0000 (GMT) From: Denny denny@concretecow.com To: MK LUG mk@lists.lug.org.uk
If you read the recent announcement on www.linuxuk.co.uk about the release of SmoothWall, you will note that the author is less than impressed with the amount of help he has received from people in the UK LUGs. There are a few replies on there from people (myself included) who run LUGs, but I thought it might be good if a few LUG members wanted to comment also?
Have a read and see what you think of his opinions... please try to respond intelligently, not in a confrontational manner.
Regards, Denny

I only heard of smoothwall (which has a great deal of potential, IMO) when I opened Linux Magazine last weekend. I certainly don't recall anything in here about it. Of course, I may have missed it... However, IMO, if this bloke wanted comment, he first needed to ask for it.
In fact, I do have comments, and recommendations, as I've been playing around with it this past week. I'll see what I can do to write them down.
Cheers, Laurie.

I know it's sad to reply to one's own posts, but...
Most of my "gripes" seems to have been addressed in the new 0.9.6 version just released, and which I need to test. However, having twice downloaded a 22meg .iso file which didn't work, I think I'll wait for the magazine CD... Maybe there's a proper upgrade now...
Cheers, Laurie.

I'd need to check my facts, as I am currently at work and away from my Smoothwall log, but I am pretty sure we are on a cover disk next month. Either Linux Magazine or a second shot on Linux Format. I'll try to remember to check tonight ;-)
It's a good point about upgrading, I know the install wipes your hard disk, and I don't see that changing, but some means to backup and then import your old config files would be nice. I keep meaning to post that to the Smoothwall list.

OK, checked the web site, and Internet Works should be running 0.9.6 after Christmas. Can't find the other reference I was looking for :-( I'm new at this, I'll get better at it honest ;-)
P.S. Sorry about the mail client!
