Hi, I also had no trouble with my no-name (Aries :-) notebook using Definite 7.0 (based on Redhat 6) with XFree 3.3.5. There were some issues when I built Xfree 4.0.2 so I have gone back to the issued RPM but it worked pretty well. The video chip is ATI Rage 3D Lite.

Sorry if this sounds smug, have you tried any other distributions?
