Is a reply meant to default to individual's private email addresses on this group - or is it yet another problem with gmail [or perhaps my email client setting somewhere].

On Gmail, if you use "Reply" it will default to whoever sent the email you're replying to. If you use "Reply to all", it replies to both the list address (main@lists.alug.org.uk) and whoever posted, then take whoever posted out so the reply goes to the list only.

Some mail clients have a reply to list function which will send the reply to the list rather than the originator of the parent message.
Essentially the list is doing the "right" thing but only a subset of mail clients seem to understand this.

Thanks Simon - i've just done reply in the past and tried to remember to post in the alug address from my contacts list. I forgot on this occasion! I'll be dropping gmail - as i learnt with my yahoogroups it does some other things differently. Very unreliable with attached photos i've found. In fact the only thing i like in gmail is the calendar.

There is no "Reply-To:" header in the postings I receive from ALUG, so it's up to the settings on the mail agent in which you initiate the reply process.
My own, in this case, pops up a box asking me
"Reply: Include all recipients?"
and, if I answer "No", replies only to the original sender (the person who posted the message).
If I answer "Yes", then I get the option to delete any of the addresses which then show up (which, in the case of ALUG, are the original poster and the list address; so, if I just want to reply to the list, I delete the OP).
For messages where there is a "Reply-To:", I first get asked if I want to reply to that address instead of the "From:" address.
If I choose ""No" then I get the "all recipients" query.
Best wishes, Ted.
