I'm still trying with my WG511 and I'm nearly there.
When I plug the WG511 (made in China) card into my Dell Latitude a PCI event is not generated. This appears to be because ndiswrapper information is not included in /lib/modules/2.4.27/modules.pcimap although the ndiswrapper module is listed in /lib/modules/2.4.27/modules.dep.
I have a file called 'modules.ndiswrapper' in my /etc/ndiswrapper directory but I don't know now where it came from. It doesn't apear to be part of the ndiswrapper source download. If I manually add the contents of this file (3 lines) to modules.pcimap then things begin to happen when I plug the card in. The snag is, of course, that modules.pcimap is re-written every time the laptop boots.
How can I get the relevant lines to be included in modules.pcimap each time depmod is run?

It's an evil card! EVIL! but, in theory, you shouldn't need ndiswrapper, there's a set of people writing a native driver for this card, I'll test it in the next few weeks (assuming I get time to play), as I've also got one of those laying about (I've also got a proper Made in Taiwan WG511 and an atheros based (madwifi) WG511T, overkill one may say for a guy that's only got one working laptop and PCMCIA/Cardbus slot ;)

Hmmm, I rely on debians system to get this right, and the kernel to also get it right. The problem with the WG511 is that the Made in Taiwan and Made in China cards share the same PCI ids, unfortunately this limits the scope somewhat, and as a general rule is defaults to believing that the card isn't knackered (as is the case with the made in china cards).

Find what generates modules.pcimap, it'll be either a hotplug script or an init script (at a guess), hopefully, modifying the source should sort it.

I bought it because the WG511 was, supposedly, well supported in Linux! Now that I'm stuck with it I would like to get it to work properly as far as inserting/removing goes.

But I do need it at present.

If someone is writing a proper driver then I'd be very happy to try it when it appears.

Lucky you.

I understand that modules.pcimap is generated by depmod and the results are used by hotplug. I certainly wouldn't like to try fiddling with the depmod source as I doubt that I'd have any idea what to do.

It is well supported, as long as it's the right version ;)

http://jbnote.free.fr/prism54usb/ <-- that's the driver for the prism54 softmac based cards (as in made in china), I've not had a chance to try it myself yet, so it could well not work. I need to read the source some more to work out what it's building and why then I should be in a position to test it. Looks like a reasonable project, probably with a look if all else fails.
I'm afraid that I can't help with ndiswrapper, it has *never* worked for me... but if your Made in China card is the same as mine, the kernel picks it up and tries to load the prism54 drivers... so, first step is to blacklist the prism54 driver from hotplug and discover (if you've got discover installed).

A little while ago I was asking for help in getting a Netgear WG511 card working. Now I don't have to bother any more because someone stole my Latitude laptop from a hotel room when I was on holiday recently. They also stole the room key from reception.
I am hoping to get an IBM Thinkpad R51 from the insurance as it's about equivalent to the Dell. I understand that Thinkpads are pretty compatible with Linux and wondered if any of you have experience of this particular model?
Graphics chip is Intel Extreme Graphics 2. 56K V.92 modem (No other details given except that I think it's an internal PCI modem - sounds nasty) Wireless is Intel 802.11bg and Bluetooth (Not interested in the Bluetooth) Integrated Intel PRO/1000 Gigabit Ethernet
Are the above likely to work?
Am I likely to have any problems with a PCMCIA CompactFlash reader?
Regards to all.

I'm typing this mail from an R51. It runs SuSE 9.3 Pro just fine, not tried any other distros on it.
Matt
Thanks chaps - sounds promising.
I'm going to boot it, when I get it, with an Ubuntu live CD and see how it goes. I'd like to put Debian Testing on it as I have that on the two desktops here.
I have heard that lm_sensors does nasty things to Thinkpads - is that still relevant?

Hi Barry,
Most of that hardware should work. My PC has Intel Extreme Graphics, which work fine for me (I don't play games much).
THe wireless sounds like the Intel 200, which works perfectly. I have it on my HP laptop. Use the ipw2200 driver. The Bluetooth is probably a USB device, so that'll work with no effort. Asfor the modem, good luck. I never bothered trying with my laptop.

No problems at all.
Good luck! Tim.
