Well after a while I have just got a network connection hanging and was able to do a traceroute to the site:-
chris$ traceroute www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk traceroute to www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk (195.224.249.41), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets 1 * * * 2 * * * 3 * * * 4 * * * 5 * * * 6 * * * 7 * * * 8 * * * 9 * * * 10 * * * 11 * * * 12 * * * 13 * * * 14 * * * 15 * * * 16 * * * 17 * * * 18 * * * 19 * * * 20 * * * 21 * * * 22 * * * 23 * * * 24 * * * 25 * * * 26 * * * 27 * * * 28 * * * 29 * * * 30 * * *
Hmmmm. The rest of the internet works fine, no problems at all but any connection to anywhere on www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk just hangs.
A host or dig to www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk works fine.
So I think it something getting stuck at this end but I wish I could work out what!
Ah, another clue (or not), connecting to www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk from another computer on the LAN here works OK while the connections from my desktop are still hanging. Connecting from a different browser on my desktop computer doesn't work though.
Any suggestions for further diagnosis?

Interesting, no first hop, which I'd expect to be your router, check that the default route you have set is correct on the box, try tracerouting elsewhere, check that you actually have a default route, stop blocking ICMP at the router...
Making the assumption that you're NATing these connections, then it could also be a bug in your nat configuration. Definately sounds like it's something internal to you.

Further, IE in a VirtualBox on my desktop machine times out on www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk too.
So it's either something wrong in my desktop machine and/or in the way it interacts with the router. Another machine on the same subnet can access www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk, both machines are plugged into ports on the same switch which is in turn connected to the router - so they're both effectively connected to the same port on the router.

Restarting dnsmasq has unhung the connections to www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk, have I found a bug in dnsmasq or have I misconfigured it?
I'll go and ask on the dnsmasq list. It's odd though as the other machine on the LAN uses dnsmasq on my machine.

How about tracerouting from the good connection, and then tracerouting from the bad connection to different points on the good route?
