Hi there,
I have an opportunity to grab the latest version of Debian and write to CD. But I cannot guarantee what platform it will be or who will do it.
Can someone tell me where I have obtain the latest unstable (which is pretty stable no?) Debian in ISO format for direct CD writing please.
If I make it to ALUG5 I'll bring it along.

You can't get ISO9660 images for Debian unstable distributions, since they change daily at worst (not worth building a new iso every day!) You could just burn a copy of the i386 parts of the ftp archive, which'll work, and I believe there's a utility for creating unstable isos, too.
Alternativly, someone might be able to mirror the i386 lump of the ftp server and bring it to ALUG again. As you say, debian unstable is fairly stable. It is currently frozen, which means that no new packages or upstream versions are being allowed in; it will remain this way for upto six weeks (until all the release critical bugs are fixed), at which point it will be released (complete with prebuilt isos).

Can't guarantee it will be downloaded to a ext partition, hence the request for an ISO.

Six weeks? Is this likely? Is it worth waiting? Will the world end because Corel 1.0 will be out of date?
James.

It should be about that time, yes - last time it took two months, and it's been frozen for a week or two now. As of the 21st, the number of release crit. bugs was 311 - believe it or not, this is not too bad. We'll see, it certainly shouldn't be far ouotside 6 weeks.

Ah, I was under the impression that unstable isn't frozen. Potato is frozen, yes, but afaik there are actually three states at the moment: the current stable, which is still slink, the old unstable, potato, which is frozen while they poke it a bit, and will become stable in a month or so (whereupon I shall upgrade the same day :), and woody, the unstable release...

Indeed - sorry - been using the words 'potato' and 'unstable' interchangably for the last eight months... Embarasing at sunday lunch, I tell you...
