Can i just use two gfx cards connected up to different monitors... or do i need a duel head card like some of the matrox ones.
Its just ive got 2 gfx cards and i would like to use them in X when im debuging programs. will i have problems if they are different cards with diff memory etc...?

That is the usual way. There was a good article on Multi-Head in a recent Linux Format. Had look at the site but couldn't see anything on back issues. I recently mailed them however about using something from their mag on our website and they sent me the pdf of the 2 page article - gratis and looking good. So kudos. (Someone's gonna write and say it was actually in another mag now... ;o)) I think X4.01 is a requirement.

Different cards is fine. Its usual to do it with a conbination of new 'snazzy' card on good monitor, and old 'recycled - saved from the scrap heap' card on like-described monitor. HTH

Nope, it can be done with X3. I successfully got it working for a while with a couple of identical ATI gfx cards.

If you're using X4 this should be relatively straightforward (this kind of thing is called xinerama in X4). If you're using X3 it's a little less simple, but still possible. There are loads of HOWTO docs out there on this - try:
