I'd like to come along to this. I've been trying to install Debian onto my laptop. I've partioned the disk ok and can dual-boot it and got Linux installed as far as the basics, but can't get X to install.
So I need help. Do you need to know anything else from me in the meantime?

You should be aware that it's a little tricky to find X4 rather than X3 in dselect, as they're being run at the same time.
Try installing 'xserver-xfree86' + deps, and see where that gets you. The X 4 config (/etc/X11/XFree86Config-4) is much simpler than X 3 days.
I guess if the laptop has a TFT display, you might need to limit the resolutions X is allowed to use? See other thread, but I don't know whether my suggestion helped him or not.

I still prefer aptitude (testing/unstable) or console-apt (stable) to dselect.

Isn't there an X -configure or similar? X 4 crashes here, though. Bug is known and supposedly fixed in 4.2, but the other problems with 4.2 mean that it's taking a while to enter Debian.

If using X 4, try:
dpkg-reconfigure --p=low xserver-xfree86
from Debian quick reference manual at: http://www.uk.debian.org/doc/manuals/quick-reference/ch-tune.en.html#s9.4
It worked for my work machine with an i810 graphics chip.
