I'm looking for an X file manager, or just an icon manager program, that will show me the icon files in a directory as the icons they are. Simply a display program is all I need really, just a way to select icons by name.
Any suggestions? xfm isn't it as it just shows a teddy bear for all the icon files.
I'm not sure if gqview is what you're after... but it might be :-)
http://gqview.sourceforge.net/
otherwise, the xfce4 file manager, xffm can do what you're after.. but i've never felt its interface is quite right....
Rob.

Yes, that's pretty close to what I want, if I select 'show thumbnails' I can scroll through the icons fairly easily. It also has the sense to move around directories with a single click. It was installed on my system already so I didn't need to go and get it.

My feling too, I've actually just emigrated from xfce to fvwm2 and I'm finding it *much* better in just about every way.
