Hi all,
Right - I've improved my rethemeing script a bit, and now it can cope with different themes (sortof), so, if anyone has got a shiny new theme, then throw it at me and I'll drop it on the site.
Basic requirements for a theme this end: * HTML template using the following as place holders for things: + <!--title--> - should be fairly self explainatory + <!--content--> - guess what goes here! * A CSS style sheet * A spare 5 minutes for me to check the theme, plonk it in to a directory, and quickly test it
Current 'themes' can now be viewed at: http://www.sommitrealweird.co.uk/alug/retheme-engine/
Basically they're all currently based off of (Stilvoid|Steve)'s origional redesign. The one that's still named 'stilvoid' is the closest to his origional theme that he pasted on to IRC, with some *very* minor modifications.
If anyone has any further suggestions, comments, useful information etc please feel free to either contact me directly or via the list.
Thanks, - -- Brett Parker web: http://www.sommitrealweird.co.uk/ email: iDunno@sommitrealweird.co.uk

They are all looking very smart and usable. Excuse me for being dim, but will the wiki fit in with these themes too?

Well, you can view the wiki through them... and actually the wiki uses a template as it's backing and so we can theme it... Though it's still not a bad plan to replace the phpwiki we're currently running with something not so bug filled and with some real revision history. I've been thinking about that a bit recently, and might see if I can import the wiki into a different engine sometime over the next few weeks if no one else wants to do it...
I'd also quite like to see the site redeveloped to be more editable even more easily (OK - slef has gained some ground there with his editme.pl script, but I still think we should consider some alternatives).
Also, from IRC earlier, maybe it's time we actually got us a pretty logo, so any logo developers out there that want to take a stab at it, please do. If you've got nowhere to host it, yell and I'll host it at www.sommitrealweird.co.uk. There's some source images in http://www.sommitrealweird.co.uk/alug/logos/ that might be of use that I've been playing with, the alug-logo.xcf file is what I generally work in, which can be opened in gimp (.xcf is the gimp file format).

I recently looked at wiki engines and ended up using a rather mad Russian thing called WackoWiki [1] - terrible name, but it works pretty well and is fairly lightweight and straightforward...

Al has done the import into a usemod wiki with HantsLUG's antispam patches and I think it's just awaiting transfer.

For my entry in the retheme competition, I'm struggling to find a suitable picture that conveys "Anglia" or ALUG's sense of place in the world too. My current ideas are the Norwich skyline (visible at http://mjr.towers.org.uk/comp/alugtalk/ just now), Ely cathedral, Orwell bridge, or Lynn's custom house. UEA Nelson Court (kit meeting venue) is showing on Brett's rethemer. If you have an idea or - even better - a suitable base image, please email me or mention it on irc.alug.org.uk #alug tomorrow 8pm.
Thanks,

I have a bit of a dislike of using Norwich Cathedral as it is a bit too "Norwich" and not enough "East Anglia" (i.e. I think using it as a picture makes people associate it with Norwich more than East Anglia). Seeing that Alug has a good presence in Norwich already that image just reinforces that stereotype that Alug is in Norfolk/Norwich only, which currently it is, a bit, sortof, and I think we really want to try and find some other meeting venues in the Anglia region. (The Ely meetings seem to have stalled, and we havn't been to Syleham for a while).
I have to fully agree about the finding a picture for East Anglia not being easy as it is so geographically big and quite diverse. The tux riding an Anglia TV horse idea isn't a bad one, and I always wondered about any Iceni/Anglo-Saxon links we could push? The only other thing I can think of is a bit "Norfolk" so not /that/ suitable again which would be Tux on a Wherry... Of course, we are a bit of a farming region so how about Tux in a brand-new-combine-harvester ;) or working as a gang master with an illegal immigrant workforce? ;) I don't think we could really settle for a Tux with a bit of straw in his mouth as that is more a Somerset thing?
Does anyone on the list have any ideas about what really pushes "East Anglia" graphically?
Thanks Adam

Tux in the Sutton Hoo helmet?
That might look quite good actually, assuming that visitors realise that that is what it is, and don't think they have blundered upon Viking LUG or something!
Is there a danger that trying to come up with a generic East Anglian graphic is going to get too complicated or obscure? There aren't that many things that connect the whole area, after all.

I don't have anything like the graphic skills to pull this off, but my first thought was something based on a map of East Anglia. Obviously the area is the wrong shape for a banner (too square), but maybe a BBC weather map approach would work to reduce the height it required. Perhaps then some key images (like Norwich cathedral, but also those of Ely/Peterborough/etc) could be superimposed on it, making it more "3d".

Aren't they the maps that are rendered on our favourite Operating System ? If so that would be doubly cool as a little in-joke.

I did think that when I first posted, but I wasn't sufficiently sure to state it as fact. But yes, I think you're right.

For Norwich, there's a picture by some migrant on URL:http://www.earth.li/norwichguide/ the Open Guide to Norwich but of city hall, not the cathedral. I think I saw almost that same shot being used on wikipedia, but without the xmas lights.
Barry Samuels has kindly told me that we could use pictures from URL:http://www.beenthere-donethat.org.uk/ his trave guide which includes Suffolk, Essex and Cambs for the ALUG map.
Anyone able to make a map with some flair?
Thanks,

Very remiss of me. Do you want a Mid Suffolk meeting organised? Any Sunday as long as the hall is free. Your preferences for available dates posted here please.
Cheers, BJ

Aaaah, I awakened you :) What about an Xmas meet? (around December obviously) also any interest in an Alug Christmas meal again for early next year? and any ideas on venue? use a new one? one in the city? on a weekend? or use the same venue as last time? (last year was the Buckinghamshire Arms in Blickling, North Norfolk, their website appears to be MIA this time round, who knows I may even make it to the meal this time)
Thanks Adam
