Owen can't make Sundays meeting

Hi people, I spoke to Owen briefly yesterday afternoon and he has asked me to tell the list that he will not be able to make the meeting on Sunday and therefore there will be no talk on IPC. He has told me that he will do the talk sometime in the future, the reason that he can't come is because of some personal commitments. As for my talk on Debian, I don't currently have either a phoneline or computer in my current home in London so any chance of doing anything Debian related is not so easy. I am hoping to move out soon and get to a broadband serviced area though so things will (hopefully) be resolved then and I will then work on getting a talk together for next year. The reason above BTW is why I have not been active on list for some time as I can't get ssh out and don't have a linux box yet (I got the goahead on Friday for a linux firewall/ipmasq/fileserver/mailserver/whatever... box) so should be back on list soon. That installed and ran, but it only had a selection of about a dozen drivers, which (I gather from reading the documentation) were only intended as 'sample' drivers. When I went through the ghastly experience of installing Mandrake 8, I noticed that this had CUPS installed also, but had stacks and stacks of drivers, including something called 'DJ930C foomatic+stp-4.1.5(GIMP-Print)', which seemed to give better results than anything else with my 930C printer. Since I managed to find the relevant .ppd file buried in Mandrake, I thought that it would be a simple matter to copy the ppd file over to Slack and the Linux-Format version of CUPS. No such luck. The file was there in the index (once I'd restarted CUPS) but it wouldn't print at all. Then I removed that version of CUPS from Slack and tried installing the Mandrake .rpms (having converted them to .tgz) but that was a complete disaster. Sure, lots and lots of drivers now listed, but NONE of them would produce a test print. I'm quite happy to accept that my intelligence is below normal for this sort of thing, but I've found the whole CUPS experience frustrating in the extreme so far. Today I found Turboprint after a search on Google.com. I didn't hold out a lot of hope, given my success to date, but I've managed to get it to work with the standard lpr that comes with Slackware and the colour photos that I've been getting today from it are as good as any I've had thus far. Best of all, I'm now free of Mandrake! The only down-side to Turboprint is that it's crippled shareware, i.e., it prints a big 'this is turboprint' sort of banner across the colour pictures. I didn't think that that sort of thing was acceptable under Linux? I'd be very interested to hear how other people have got on with this kind of thing. Gerald.

Sorry if I've asked this before: Does anyone have the Suse 5.2 CD that came on the cover of PC World (I think?). Its the only one I've been able to get to load on 4 meg 386 machines and I though it would be fun to try with the Linux Terminal Server thats coming up. problem when running perl...

Hi again, I'm getting a strange problem whenever I run perl, I get this output :- perl: warning: Setting locale failed. perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings: LANGUAGE = (unset), LC_ALL = (unset), LANG = "en_GB" are supported and installed on your system. perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C"). I know (or think) it's something to do with the file /etc/sysconfig/i18n but I can't figure out how to setup the rest, are there defaults that these variables should be set to? TIA Simon

more on network card

I think what is happening is that when the machine is rebooting, it is losing its eth0 settings, and so the wins server hasn't a clue what it is, and can't resolve any requests made for trx850 when requests are made. I then have to do insmod rtl8139 and bring up the network address with ifconfig. These settings are then lost again when i reboot. I can't find why the routing stuff is being lost. But I feel if it wasn't my problem would be solved. Sorry about this. Jen.

The only thing is that the card uses UTP rather than BNC, but as the card is talking on the network this can't be a problem. Connect via samba shares (working ok) then trying to connect to the apache server (not working ok). I *think* I've now narrowed the problem down to the WINS server not detecting the linux box on the network anymore. Why I don't know though. Thanks, Jenny.

No, I did restart samba and apache, also have checked all through /etc/network and ifconfig. Ifconfig is showing the card as there and raring to go. Log files: apache/error.log shows nothing abnormal, even though i've been trying to access webpages from windows machine on network and failing. apache/access.log doesn't recognise that the machine has been trying to reach the pages. I thought there may be a method for checking the settings for a network card, similar to the config program I ran on the 3c509. Thanks. Jen.

TCP/IP is quite core to GNU/Linux, so using ifconfig -a should show that the card is configured. Other files to look at include the contents of /etc/network and your log files. HTH -- MJR

Hi all! I've just replaced the 3com 10mb on my work box with a realtek 8139 100mb. The card is working, I can ping other machines on the network, telnet in to linuxbox from my windows machine, use my samba share, BUT the linux box is no longer appearing in the windows network neighbourhood, and the inranet site served up from linuxbox won't display over the network (it will display using lynx on itself). Is there a file in debian where I can check the settings for a card, eg check it is configured to use TCP/IP (I think ping is UDP)? Thanks, Jenny.
